Spring Servant Series with Dr. Thomas G. Long
3/23/2010 at 8:00 am

Our first annual Spring Servant Series in March was held at First Baptist Church of Knoxville. Our invited guest speaker this year was Dr. Thomas Long, professor and educator at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Long offered wonderful insights and tools to those facilitating and working with or around death and funeral services. It was truly a wonderful opportunity to learn what this outstanding educator had to say about the work which the entire community of caregivers do on a daily basis. As we all know, the ways Americans hold funerals and memorial services is changing drastically today. Cremation, memorial servies with multiple speakers, green funerals - these are but a few of the trends. But, we learned that amid all the changes the marks of saying goodbye still remain an important aspect in the grieving process. In this seminar, Dr. Long had just published Accompany Them With Singing: The Christian Funeral which explored the meanings of recent funeral changes and made a practical presentation on the good funeral. Our invited guests this year was aimed particularly at clergy and all caregivers and hospice organizations who are involved on a daily basis with caring for grieving families. With an attendance of more than seventy-five ministers and professional caregivers, we thank all of the attendees for your support and participation. Be sure to look for an announcement for the Spring Servant Series in March of 2011.

A Day At Second Harvest Food Bank
3/31/2010 at 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Continuing in our poise of giving back to the community, the staff of Rose Mortuary recently completed a day of volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank. Second Harvest relies on community man-power to operate. More than 3,500 people will volunteer with the foodbank this year. They will sort donated product, sponsor food drives, help run special events, recruit a Hunger 101 class, process mail and much more. It doesn't take much to make a big difference in the lives of others.
